I turned forty this year. Not a big deal, I thought. I also got made redundant this year. Also not that much of a big deal, I thought. I’m now about to send my youngest child to school. Kind of a big deal, I guess. The other day someone said to me “What are you going to do with yourself when Little Miss goes off to school?” Although it was meant as a throw-away comment, all of a sudden I wondered, after ten years in the wilderness of babies and toddlers, what now? After carefully pondering this, I was surprised to discover the reality of the new me: a slightly overweight woman in her forties, skint with no obvious career prospects, forgotten passions, a cluttered disorganised house, and friendships laying in tatters after a decade of neglect. I made myself a promise. I will reclaim it. I will give every area of my life the time and energy it needs, and become the version of me that I deserve to be. Kind of like my own “Eat, Love, Pray” – but to be fair there will probably be more eating, less praying, and zero glamorous overseas travel. Let the journey begin!
